Skip to contentPreviously the paediatric department at Newham University Hospital
was only able to deliver acute Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for babies under 10kg. It was also only available as Nasal CPAP, excluding treatment on children over 10kg. The unit needed a device that enabled the ward to provide CPAP therapy via a face mask for patients over 10kg.
Unable to deliver acute CPAP therapy to patients >10kg. The CPAP therapy for patients <10kg could only be delivered via nasal interface increasing the risk of pressure sores and excluding some groups of patients.
By introducing the AquaVENT® FD140i the unit is now able to deliver full facial CPAP for babies, children and young people of all ages, therefore being able to care for a large cohort of patients. The AquaVENT® FD140i facilitates an easy transition from High Flow Oxygen Therapy (HFOT) to CPAP therapy meaning the team can utilise one device for both CPAP and HFOT therapy delivery.
The AquaVENT® FD140i has a back up battery that lasts for up to 60 minutes. This has eased patient transfer for children receiving CPAP in the Emergency Department that need transferred to the Rainbow Ward.
The main benefit has been being able to treat a large cohort of children who couldn’t previously be accommodated. Having one device that can deliver two therapies with a backup battery has improved efficiencies and support for patients being transferred from the ED to the ward. Staff have also noticed a better seal when using a face mask, delivering CPAP therapy more efficiently.
